The Government of Castilla y León has today ratified the appointment of Rodrigo Alonso Alcalde as the new managing director of the ‘Atapuerca System, Culture of Evolution’ (SACE) and the Museum of Human Evolution (MEH), following the ordinary retirement of the previous director, Aurora Martín Nájera.

The Department of Culture, Tourism, and Sports considers Rodrigo Alonso Alcalde, the current coordinator of the MEH, to be the ideal person to hold this managerial position and continue the project currently being developed in the ‘Atapuerca System, Culture of Evolution’ and the Museum of Human Evolution, both under this Department.

Alonso Alcalde holds a Ph.D. in Prehistory and has been involved in various research projects of the Government of Castilla y León, the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training, and Sports, and the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, with a notable connection to the Atapuerca Project since 1999. He has participated in numerous archaeological survey and excavation campaigns, accumulating over 25 years of experience.

Since 2016, he has co-directed the excavation of the Neanderthal site at Cueva del Prado Vargas. He has delivered courses and conferences in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Romania, Germany, France, and Argentina, and has taken part in numerous national and international congresses. His expertise spans disciplines such as archaeological heritage management, museology, experimental archaeology, and Prehistory education. He has overseen over fifty exhibition and scientific dissemination projects and has published over fifty scientific works in the fields of Prehistory, Cultural Heritage management, and museum education.

He has been associated with the Museum of Human Evolution since 2010, initially as a didactic and museum animation technician until November 2022 when he assumed the role of museum coordinator up to the present date.
