The Junta of Castile and León joins the three days of national mourning decreed by the Government of Spain for the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis and has ordered that flags fly at half-mast on all official buildings in the Community, as a sign of respect for the Pontiff until the official solemn funeral takes place.
During the three days of mourning, the regional government suspends its official agenda and, for this reason, postpones the award ceremony of the Castile and León 2024 Awards scheduled for April 22 and cancels the institutional event planned in Villalar de los Comuneros on April 23.
Furthermore, cultural and sports activities aimed at the people of Castile and León, including concerts and charity races, will continue on these dates but without institutional representation from the regional government.
On the other hand, the tribute ceremony planned for April 23 to Félix Pérez, one of the founders of the musical group Candeal, who passed away in 2020 and was a distinguished advocate of Castilian and Leonese folk music, will be postponed.
The Government of Castile and León, representing the feelings of the majority of Castilians and Leonese, wants to convey their emotions of sadness and grief for the passing of Pope Francis. President Alfonso Fernández Mañueco has expressed his deep sorrow and emphasized that Pope Francis will be remembered for his closeness, commitment to peace, and tireless defense of human dignity, being one of the most important religious figures of this century who has marked a key period in the recent history of the church and humanity.
Finally, the Junta of Castile and León wants to express their condolences and solidarity to the bishops and archbishops of the dioceses in the Community, the President of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, and the Vatican’s Nuncio in Spain.
