The regional government promotes social policies to foster an education based on truth, justice, and freedom. Thus, since the 2017-2018 school year, the Department of Education, in collaboration with the Commissioner for Victims of Terrorism of the Junta of Castilla and León, under the Department of Presidency, and the Association of Victims of Terrorism of Castilla and León (AVTCyL), carries out the program ‘Testimony of Terrorism Victims in the Classroom’.

This morning, the counselors of the Presidency, Luis Miguel González Gago, and Education, Rocío Lucas, have visited the Julian Marías High School in Valladolid to present the talk given by Nieves Chillón, who experienced terrorism firsthand. This initiative, aimed at sensitizing students to the tragic consequences of terrorism, both for individuals and society as a whole, has reached over 14,000 students from 225 educational centers throughout Castilla and León.

During the meeting, Rocío Lucas emphasized that governments cannot allow the new generations to be unaware of what Spain has experienced. «From the Department of Education, we consider it essential for young people to know this reality and understand that violence can never be the answer. We cannot allow history to be distorted, nor for the suffering of the victims to be forgotten,» highlighted the Education Minister.

On his part, Luis Miguel González Gago stated that the regional government is firmly committed to continuing its duties in accordance with the principles of memory, dignity, justice, and truth, alongside terrorism victims and in collaboration with the academic sphere, both in high schools and universities: «We will continue to progress with determination, ensuring that the testimony of the victims and their legacy remain central in our society.»

The program ‘Testimony of Terrorism Victims in the Classroom’ consists of two parts. Firstly, classroom work with didactic units to address this topic in subjects such as Geography and History, Contemporary World History, Philosophy, Psychology, and Ethical Values; and subsequently, with meetings where students can directly hear the testimonies of the victims to understand what happened and keep the memory alive. This academic year, 12 speakers will share their experiences in 58 schools or high schools in the Community.
