Castilla y León | President of the Junta de Castilla y León

The President of the Junta de Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, participated on Wednesday in the inauguration of the new headquarters of the Spanish Association Against Cancer in Burgos, reaffirming his strong commitment to continue improving the quality of life and healthcare for cancer patients, while highlighting the successful collaboration maintained by the regional government with this organization, focused on supporting patients and their families, social awareness, and advancements in research.

Among the actions promoted by the Junta in the Community, Fernández Mañueco emphasized the extension of colorectal cancer screening up to 74 years of age, or the update of cervical cancer screening with improvements not available in other regions. Furthermore, Castilla y León has the most extensive programs for breast cancer detection, from 45 to 74 years of age.

The Community also has twice as many high-tech healthcare equipment as the national average, including genomic sequencers, oncological biobanks in seven hospitals in the Community – including the University Hospital of Burgos – and advanced therapies such as immunotherapy and CAR-T. Additionally, the regional government is implementing all available diagnostic and therapeutic innovations, with increasingly personalized and humane care.

Furthermore, with the aim of improving assistance and avoiding displacements for cancer patients, the Junta de Castilla y León is progressing in the implementation of satellite radiotherapy units in the Community. In fact, the one in Ávila is already operational, the one in Soria will start operating in the coming days, and projects in Palencia, El Bierzo, and Segovia are advancing, with a total investment of 35 million euros.

Close collaboration with the AECC

During his speech, Fernández Mañueco highlighted that the Junta de Castilla y León maintains a close collaboration with the Spanish Association Against Cancer in the educational field, aiming to promote awareness from an early age; in the hospital and Primary Care network throughout the Community, to ensure support and accompaniment for patients and families; and also in psychosocial care, involving specialized professionals from the association.

In the specific case of Burgos, the regional government, in collaboration with the University of Burgos, has established the Biosanitary Research Institute, which will strengthen oncological research work in the province and throughout Castilla y León. Additionally, programs have been extended to improve the management of oncological drugs across the entire Community.
