Castilla y León | Department of Environment, Housing, and Land Planning

The Department of Environment, Housing, and Land Planning, through the Castilla y León Natural Heritage Foundation, has published on the State Procurement Platform the specifications for the rehabilitation of a part of the San Salvador de Oña complex in the province of Burgos, intended for a hostel. The tender budget amounts to 1,837,079 euros.

Last December, the councilor Juan Carlos Suárez-Quiñones and the president of the Burgos Provincial Government, Borja Suárez Pedrosa, presented the actions to be carried out in the San Salvador de Oña complex. Among them was the creation of a hostel with 120 places in the former novitiate.

Current Status

The building where the hostel will be installed is owned by the Burgos Provincial Government and is in a state of deterioration due to lack of use. According to architectural reports, it still maintains a reasonable state of conservation.

The construction subject to renovation was part of the San Salvador de Oña complex and was used as a residence, warehouse, and carpentry workshop. It is an original building from 1798 that has undergone various transformations throughout its useful life. Until 2011, the Monastery of Oña was operating as a residence for the elderly.

The San Salvador hostel will have an area of 1,920 m2 distributed among the three floors of the building that adjoins the Montes Obarenes Park Visitor Center.

The San Salvador de Oña monastery is an important heritage attraction, as well as the entire monumental complex of the town of Burgos, combined with the landscape of the Montes Obarenes – San Zadornil natural park, making this area a top-level tourist destination.

Suitability of the Building

The suitability of the rehabilitation of the former novitiate to become a hostel is based on four key aspects:

  • Recovery actions have already been carried out in the complex, such as the restoration of the Park House, the former cowshed of the complex. These renovations allow for their conservation and maintenance thanks to the use they receive.
  • The rehabilitation and enhancement of the building is a commitment to sustainability.
  • An edifice of high heritage value will be recovered.
  • A significant part of the building is suitable for use as a hostel.

Actions to be Taken

The future hostel is a building shaped like an «L» and «embraces» an inner plot. Thus, the main wing will be called the east wing and the shorter building will be the west wing.

The east wing has three floors. The ground floor has access from the garden, so it will become the main entrance. This area will have rest areas, kitchen, storage rooms, administration, adapted toilets, reception, dining room, cafeteria, and lounges. The rooms will be located on the other floors.

In total, there will be 66 places distributed in 10 apartment-type rooms, each with a capacity for 4 people, four more rooms with space for 6 users, and two more individual rooms.

The west wing will be used for shared rooms with communal bathrooms. It will have 6 rooms with a capacity for between 4 and 24 people, all in bunk beds, making a total of 54 places.

Other Actions in the Province of Burgos

In the province of Burgos and as part of the development of the Special Tourist Infrastructure Program in Protected Natural Areas, work is being done on the actions detailed in ANNEX I.
