Castilla y León | Mobility and Digital Transformation Department

The Junta de Castilla y León continues to advance its commitment to road safety and the improvement of road infrastructures in the Community. Through the intervention plan in crossings, the regional government is carrying out works in 30 municipalities across the nine provinces, with a total investment of 9 million euros, co-financed by the European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism (MRR).

These actions, which will be fully completed before the end of this year, aim to reduce accidents in mixed traffic sections, reinforce pedestrian protection, and adapt roads to a safer and more sustainable mobility model. The interventions affect urban sections owned by the region, crucial for inter-municipal connections and access to essential services such as public transport.

During his visit to the start of the works in Pajares de la Lampreana (Zamora), the Director General of Roads and Infrastructure, Jesús Puerta, emphasized that «these actions not only dignify public spaces but also serve an essential function: improving road safety, both for traffic and pedestrians, and ensuring that our roads meet current safety needs.»

He pointed out that «the investment in these crossings reduces risks for pedestrians – with the construction or rehabilitation of existing sidewalks – and for drivers – with traffic calming measures, improved lighting, elimination of dangerous spots, and modernization of sanitation and water supply networks, in line with a sustainable and responsible development model.» At the same time, «necessary improvements are made to access existing public transport with the adaptation of bus stops.»

Interventions in Zamora

In the province of Zamora, with a specific investment of 874,830 euros, the actions focus on the municipalities of Pajares de la Lampreana, Tagarabuena, and Cañizo.

In Pajares de la Lampreana, work is being done on 840 meters of the ZA-714, with comprehensive improvements including paving, stormwater collectors, public lighting, and new raised pedestrian crossings. Safety is prioritized in school areas and transport stops, with speed bumps and autonomous solar lighting.

In Tagarabuena, the works on the ZA-712 cover 685 meters. Sidewalks are renewed with non-slip pavement and vegetation is introduced as a natural barrier. The intervention near the church ensures a respectful integration with the heritage environment, without neglecting safety and accessibility criteria.

In Cañizo, on the CL-612, work is done on 555 meters with the creation of safe sidewalks, ditch crossings, and a redesign in the Plaza Mayor area to improve access to public transport. Lighting and drainage networks are updated, eliminating risks from runoff and improving nighttime visibility.

All actions share the same objective: ensuring the safety of pedestrians and drivers in urban environments, reinforcing the functionality of crossings as an essential part of the road network.

These works are part of the Junta’s comprehensive strategy to connect with quality, provide security, and invest in a rural environment with modern and secure services.
