Finalización de la urbanización de la plaza de Santa Cecilia en el barrio San José.

El Ayuntamiento de Salamanca continues to improve the parks and squares of the city to make them healthier and more enjoyable spaces for families to relax and have fun. The mayor of Salamanca, Carlos García Carbayo, presented today the urbanization project of Santa Cecilia square, which will culminate in the modernization of the squares and leisure spaces in this area.

With a base bidding budget of 269,872 euros and a 4-month execution period, this action, which has the prior approval of the neighborhood association, will improve accessibility, road safety, and energy efficiency, as well as create a pedestrian area with more benches, green areas, and equipment for sports and physical exercise.

The renovation project of Santa Cecilia square includes, first of all, a parking area next to Maestro Argenta street, with a total of 33 parking spaces, one of them for people with disabilities.

For the rest of the square, a pedestrian area with universal accessibility is planned, where a space has been reserved for the relocation of existing ping-pong tables and calisthenics circuit, complementing the adjacent dog area. This space includes three new benches, two trash cans, a drinking fountain, a fire hydrant, and the renewal of public lighting with LED technology.

This pedestrian area will also allow greater accessibility to Maestro Guridi and Maestro Jiménez streets (where the City Council already modernized the children’s play area) through a new ramp with double handrails, handrails on the stairs, and on a section of the existing pedestrian walkway, in order to prevent falls.

Furthermore, the degraded garden areas next to the dog area will be renovated, and new green areas will be created with the planting of 26 trees (maples, lindens, and almez) and shrubs in 620 square meters of gardens, where an anti-weed mesh, a layer of wood chips on top of the soil layer, and drip irrigation will be installed to promote better maintenance and water savings.

Investment in all neighborhoods without raising municipal taxes

Carbayo highlighted that the renovation of Santa Cecilia square continues the significant investment effort made by the City Council of Salamanca over the past five years, amounting to nearly 10 million euros to refurbish around fifty parks and squares in the city, as part of a total investment in all neighborhoods between 2019 and 2024 exceeding 150 million euros.

This unstoppable transformation continues in 2025 with a budget of 22.4 million euros for new works after an additional injection due to the surplus from the previous fiscal year. This will expand the renovation of water supply pipes, the urbanization of streets to improve accessibility and road safety, the construction of new squares like Vistahermosa, the renovation of squares like Los Bandos and playgrounds, the modernization of sports facilities and the construction of the new Pizarrales sports center and a sports court in Los Alcaldes, as well as the planting of new trees and shrubs throughout the city, and the improvement of landscaped promenades.

Over 12.5 million invested in the neighborhoods of San José, El Tormes, and La Vega

The City Council of Salamanca is making a significant investment effort in the neighborhoods of San José, El Tormes, and La Vega, exceeding 12.5 million euros over the past decade. Highlights include the renovation of all squares and the construction of a heated pool in San José, the renewal of water networks in El Tormes, and the urbanization of the streets of La Vega.

Improving accessibility in these neighborhoods has been a priority in recent years, not only with the lowering of curbs and sidewalks to facilitate transit for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, but also with the construction of ramps on Joaquín Rodrigo and Maestro José Lidón streets to eliminate architectural barriers.

Furthermore, road safety has been improved with the installation of a speed radar on Hilario Goyenechea Avenue, surveillance cameras in the parking lot of Maestro Luna square, and increased controls by the Local Police to prevent car races on the main avenues. Sustainable mobility has also been enhanced with a bike lane that connects the city to Carbajosa de la Sagrada and the El Montalvo industrial estate through San José.

Finally, the mayor noted that the improvements in this area of the city will continue with the new access road to the Reina Sofía soccer field.
