The Municipal Socialist Group in the City Council of Salamanca has denounced that «numerous» plots and buildings of patrimonial importance are «abandoned» due to the «negligence and neglect» by the municipal government towards heritage, urging them to act and address the requests of experts, political groups, and citizens.
«Heritage is the greatest treasure we have received, it is unforgivable not to maintain it for future generations,» the socialists have stated.
Some of the examples pointed out by the PSOE in a statement collected by Europa Press are «the poor image presented by the shored-up facades on Rúa Mayor, the collapses in the Cueva de Salamanca, and the accelerated ruin of the mansion on Paseo de la Estación.»
Regarding the plots on Rúa Mayor, it is a problem «entrenched since 2008 in the case of the one that housed the Hotel Universal and since 2010 in the one located at number 49.» The PSOE lamented in their statement that the municipal government has been announcing «supposed projects and solutions for these plots since then, but the reality is that both locals and visitors have to see shored-up facades on one of the most important streets in Salamanca,» as councilor María García has asserted.
The socialists have raised this complaint on several occasions in recent years, but, they claim, the municipal government of the Popular Party «has yet to move from words to action.»
NO SOLUTIONS
This week, in the Heritage Commission, the socialists have presented the situation «without the PP providing any specific solution, despite these plots being in a protected environment and the City Council having the authority to compel owners to end the abandonment,» as they have added.
In fact, about a year ago, the municipal government announced «coercive measures» against the owners, «but since then, the situation remains the same,» they explained. Just a few meters from Rúa Mayor, the socialists continued, is the Menor Pan y Carbón School, the oldest in the city and currently in a ruinous state. The Cueva de Salamanca has also recently suffered damage, as denounced by the PSOE, plagued by humidity problems that have not been resolved for years despite complaints from the socialists and «neighborhood groups» they added.
Outside the historic center, the mansion located on Paseo de la Estación is in an advanced state of ruin that the socialists consider a danger to the residents. «Several roof tiles have already fallen and it is clear that it could happen again, right next to a sidewalk that is constantly used by people,» María García pointed out. In addition, the garden surrounding the building is regularly filled with weeds and debris, added the socialists.
Heritage protection is one of the major pending issues for the municipal government, which they accuse of acting short-term, «based on patches.» They claim that Salamanca is full of places with a significant past that, however, are in a ruinous state. To highlight this, last May they presented the map of «The Wounds of Salamanca,» which collects these places and can be consulted on the website psoeaytosalamanca.es.
