El Ayuntamiento de Salamanca continues to modernize the neighborhoods to contribute to a more accessible city with modern public services, thus improving the quality of life of its residents. This was highlighted today by the mayor, Carlos García Carbayo, during the start of the first phase of the comprehensive redevelopment works in the La Vega neighborhood, which includes the streets Palos de la Frontera, Navegantes, Descubridores, Barco, and Felipe II, with an awarded budget of 1,508,025.61 euros and an execution period of eight months.
This project, responding to the requests of the residents after a dialogue process with their representatives, continues the significant investment effort made by the Salamanca City Council in all neighborhoods of the city over the last five years, amounting to over 150 million euros.
Carbayo pointed out that this unstoppable transformation continues in 2025 with a budget of 22.4 million euros for new works after an additional injection from the surplus obtained at the end of the previous fiscal year. This will expand the renovation of water supply pipes, the urbanization of streets to enhance accessibility and road safety, the renovation of squares like Los Bandos and playgrounds, the modernization of sports facilities, the construction of the new sports center in Pizarrales and a sports court in Los Alcaldes, the planting of new trees and shrubs throughout the city, and the improvement of landscaped promenades.
The mayor emphasized the excellent economic management of the Salamanca City Council, which allows for major city projects and the improvement of citizens’ quality of life without raising taxes, despite the economic difficulties in the current global socio-economic context.
Better public services for residents
The redevelopment of the La Vega neighborhood will bring a significant improvement in the quality of public services for the residents. Highlights include the renovation of the water supply network with 732 meters of ductile cast iron pipes, completely meshed with valves installed in each and every branch. The project also includes the total renewal of the sanitation network and all connections, installing home manholes in each of them.
Additionally, there will be a complete renewal of the public lighting, both electric networks and light points, using LED technology for greater energy efficiency, promoting savings in consumption. At the same time, underground channels will be projected for the installation of electricity and telecommunications supply networks, currently running along the facades.
More accessibility and renewed green areas
In the streets Navegantes, Descubridores, Barco, and Felipe II, accessibility will be improved through a single platform with a central lane differentiated with cobblestones to allow the necessary transit of residents’ vehicles. On the other hand, in Palos de la Frontera street, where surface parking spaces for vehicles will be maintained, the installation of tactile tiles at pedestrian crossings is planned according to current accessibility regulations.
In the La Vega neighborhood streets included in this project, the traditional flowerbed areas that characterize this neighborhood will be maintained, replacing the existing curbs with 10-centimeter wide beveled garden curbs, and 15 new tree pits and landscaped areas are planned in the currently most deteriorated areas.
In these flowerbed areas, the existing shrub plantings will be maintained, reinforced where necessary with low water consumption species to promote biodiversity, in accordance with the Green Infrastructure Strategy, Savia, to make Salamanca an even healthier city with a higher quality of life, at the forefront of the fight against climate change. A drip irrigation network and automatic sprinklers will be included for the proper maintenance of all green areas in the neighborhood. Benches and trash cans will also be installed.
Meanwhile, in the common areas at street intersections, spaces for children’s play with safety flooring and biosaludable devices for the elderly are included. Low-height tree planting and low water consumption shrub species will be planted around these leisure areas.
