The Castilla y León Regional Government activated the search protocol for an individual brown bear this Saturday after the mortality sensor of the GPS tracking device that the animal had installed since September 2024 was activated.
By late morning, environmental agents from the Castilla y León Regional Government were able to confirm that the animal was dead, showing signs of predation by scavenging.
The removal of the individual, carried out jointly by the environmental agents of the Castilla y León Regional Government and the Civil Guard, was completed in the early afternoon on Saturday. The remains of the individual were transferred to the Wildlife Recovery Center of the Castilla y León Regional Government in Burgos, where the necropsy of the individual was performed today.
During the anatomopathological examination of the brown bear’s corpse, it was confirmed that it was an individual of advanced age, with low body condition. The presence of metallic elements compatible with a gunshot was ruled out. Given the state of the individual, with high signs of post-mortem predation, the cause of death could not be determined. Based on the information analyzed, the death could be compatible with a natural cause of death. In any case, samples were collected and will be sent to the toxicological laboratory to rule out possible poisoning.
