Castilla y León | President of the Junta of Castilla y León
The President of the Junta of Castilla y León, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, has attended the commemorative event of the 1,200th anniversary of the Fuero de Brañosera, chaired by Their Majesties the Kings of Spain, and organized by the regional government in collaboration with the Palencia City Council and the Municipality of Brañosera, where homage was paid to the oldest municipality in Spain and the origin of municipalism.
Fernández Mañueco has underscored that municipalism is deeply rooted in Castilla y León and constitutes an essential element for its social structure and territorial cohesion, as municipalities express how population settles in an extensive territory and how the relationship with the environment is structured, reflecting what the Community represents today.
In this sense, he has pointed out that municipalities are key pieces in building a future with cohesion and opportunities throughout the territory. Additionally, he has argued that their strength and ability to provide services, generate local dynamism, and improve quality of life are essential to ensure balanced development.
The Junta of Castilla y León maintains a strong commitment to the 2,248 municipalities in the Community, more than a quarter of the municipalities in Spain, and rural areas. Likewise, it continues to work on addressing challenges such as demographic issues, promoting territorial balance, and ensuring equal opportunities, regardless of where one lives.
The leader of the regional government has also praised the daily work of mayors, councilors, and provincial deputies, who dedicate their time and effort to defending their neighbors, improving services, and proudly representing the reality of each town, recognizing their dedication, generosity, and commitment as the true engine of the local world.
Finally, Fernández Mañueco has expressed gratitude for the presence of Their Majesties the Kings and highlighted their ongoing commitment to Castilla y León and the principles of unity, equality, and progress that underpin the common project of Spain.
Fuero de Brañosera
The Fuero de Brañosera, granted in 824 by Count Munio Núñez to a group of settlers, is considered the origin of municipal organization in Spain, recognizing rights, freedoms, and guarantees to those settling in the Meseta. The Statute of Autonomy of Castilla y León itself acknowledges the birth of municipalism in Brañosera and links it to the origin of the Community’s identity.
